The planning of a Master Bath remodel is no small undertaking. Let us walk you through the first project in our Illuminating Life series, and watch as we showcase the process of lighting a bathroom space from start to finish.
THE PLANNING PROCESS
So…where to start? There’s a lot to think about once you finally decide to get down and dirty with a big project like a master bathroom remodel: design concept, look, layout, overall feel of the space, etc., etc. The list goes on and on. It is also in this early stage when many of the important lighting decisions need to be made. The first step in developing a lighting and electrical plan for any space is to think about the way the space is used. In a master bathroom situation like this, two different people’s wants and needs have to be considered. For instance, is one of them a night owl, and the other an early riser? Does one require more illumination for specific tasks, like make-up application? In this project, we incorporated many layers of different types of illumination for the homeowner’s needs in the form of: recessed lighting, toe-kick lighting, wall mounted vanity lighting, a decorative ceiling fixture and an illuminated make-up mirror. All of these pieces were an important part of the puzzle and affected the construction components of the overall bathroom design. Your lighting fixtures can affect the design specifics of your cabinetry, the size and shape of your mirrors, and even the color of your paint and other finish materials! In other words- start your lighting plan as early as possible for the best outcome. Working with a trained lighting consultant to help guide you through the planning process is a key factor in successful illumination!
THE GUTS AND GLORY
Are you familiar with the old saying, “It’s going to get worse before it gets better”? It’s true, the demo and early phases of construction are a MESS. But, this is where the magic starts to happen and where the details of all of the products you have selected really come into play. The LED recessed lighting, as well as the wall mounted vanity lighting fixtures that were chosen for this bathroom project had a few specific installation details that needed to be addressed early on.
Tech Lighting’s ELEMENTS recessed fixtures have integrated LED units with an optional flange-less fitting, which were a great choice for this contemporary bathroom. Due to their square shape, it was very important that that these fixtures were perfectly “squared on” with one another on the ceiling, or you would certainly notice the discrepancy. Watch as Tami explains to us how these great fixtures come well-equipped to handle an imperfect ceiling, and how the electrician tackled their precise placement.
The wall mounted sconces selected for the vanity area of the bathroom were sleek and sophisticated, fitting the overall design concept of the bathroom perfectly. The Vanity Slim LED Bath Bar from Sonneman Lighting, also came equipped with integrated LED technology, and had six different size options available. Due to the tall ceilings in the space, we felt it important that the sconces in the vanity area had a long and lean appearance, which would give balance to the overall scale of the room. We also wanted these fixtures to provide ample illumination for the face, and distribute an even, bright illumination that would be necessary for applying make-up or shaving. The 48″ linear fixtures selected were the perfect choice. Being a low voltage product, the wiring process for these required a little more attention, which Tami addresses in the video below.
THE FINAL TOUCHES
The vision of this particular project was sleek, sophisticated and energy efficient. The finish materials chosen had a cool and contemporary vibe to them: smooth glass shower tiles, polished chrome metals, dark wood finishes and smoky gray undertones throughout the walls and flooring. The lighting chosen had to be equally cool and contemporary (of course), but also needed a modern punch. We selected the Fontanna LED fixture, also from Sonneman Lighting, for a decorative ceiling fixture in the center of the space for that added layer of modern personality. Stay tuned for final installation videos showcasing this amazing fixture, and the dramatic light-play it produces on the ceiling. Until then, take a peek at the big reveal of the completed vanity area of this project and witness how those 48″ Sonneman LED Light bars and custom made mirrors steal the show against a SENSATIONAL wallpaper backdrop!
