It’s that time of year when we start thinking of summer and the warm days ahead. Before you know it we’ll be thinking of ways to beat the heat. A ceiling fan is a great way to cool a room and also add a decorative element. Of course, there are some general guidelines when choosing a fan. Ceiling fans should generally be centered in the room, with the edge of the blade no closer than 18″ from the wall. For optimal cooling, fans should be suspended 8′ or 9′ above the floor. In spaces with low ceilings, fan blades should not be lower than 7′. (Hugger style fans or low ceiling adapters work well in this situation.) Here are some helpful hints:
Fan
Size |
Suggested Application | Room Size
(Sq. Ft.) |
24” | Bathroom, Hallway | Up to 40 |
29” | Bathroom, Hallway | Up to 50 |
36” | Breakfast Nook, Laundry Room | Up to 75 |
42” | Small Bedroom or Kitchen | Up to 100 |
50-52” | Standard Bedroom,Family / Living Room, Kitchen | Up to 400 |
54” or Larger | Great Rooms, Large Areas | Over 400 |
These guidelines should help in the selection of your fan, now you just have to pick your favorite!

I saw something about a $50 fan and a $350 fan . . .what does this mean? What is the difference?
Ceiling fan motors vary in power and so does their price. If you have a fan that you would seldom use, then a less expensive one may work fine. If it used consistently you will want to spend the money on a fan with a larger motor and steeper blade pitch. You will get a longer lasting fan that will run quietly and more efficiently.
